EventsEdit

Host of this year were Bob Hope, David Niven, Rosalind Rusell, Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Stewart and Donald Duck, the first and only time that a cartoon character became host. This is the first time that the show was broadcast live. For one of the screenplay categories, Pierre Boulle won for Bridge On The River Kwai even though he knew no English. The real writers of that film were blacklisted and earned no screen credit for their work. Joanne Woodward winning for Three Faces Of Eve, made the film the last film until the 1988 ceremony to win the leading actress award with no other nominations. The Short Film categories finally merged into one for good. Samuel Goldwyn received the Irving G Thalberg Award and 3 honorary Oscars were given out. One for Charles Brackett for his services to the Academy, another for B.B. Kahane for his services to the film industry, one for Gilber M. Broncho "Billy" Anderson for his contributions to having motion pictures developed as entertainment and to the Society Of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for contributions to the advancement of the motion picture industry.
