After 3 Hostless years at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, hosting duties at Dorothy Chandler have finally returned with Helen Hayes, Sammy Davis Jr., Alan King, and Jack Lemmon sharing hosting duties. Betty Grable made one final public appearance presenting the music categories, in which Isaac Hayes became the first black man to win a song Oscar that night. Charlie Chaplin after a 20 year exile from the United States to Switzerland, came back to receive an honorary Oscar for incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century. He was later given a 12 minute standing ovation.
