The "Oscars So White" phase has taken a turn for the worst this year as Chris Rock has come to host the Oscars for the second time in history. It has even caused some of the blacks in the film industry including Will Smith and his wife Jada to boycott the event by refusing to go. At the ceremony, there were many surprises including supporting actor, where Mark Rylance KO'd Sylvester Stallone and visual effects, in which Ex Machina won over blockbuster Star wars: The Force Awakens. Mad Max: Fury Road had done Australia proud, by breaking the record for most wins by an Australian film. As for Best Picture, Spotlight became the first film since 1952's The Greatest Show On Earth to win no more than 2 trophies. Debbie Reynolds received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award while 2 honorary Oscars have been given out: one to Spike Lee for being a champion of independent film and an inspiration to young filmmakers and one to Gena Rowlands for being an original talent whose devotion to her craft has earned her worldwide recognition as an independent film icon.
