A man for all seasons

Paul Scofield and Robert Shaw in A Man For All Seasons

Events[]

Bob Hope once again hosted at the Civic Auditorium. Patirica Neal received a standing ovation in her first appearance after a two year absence (near fatal stroke). Governor Ronald Reagan who has also being a longtime member and supporter of the academy was also in attendance. The most memorable event of the night was Mitzi Gaynor's performance of the song Georgy Girl. Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave received a nomination, marking the second time that sisters were nominated in the same category. What's ironic, the ceremony was almost cancelled due to protests from the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, but in the nick of time the dispute was settled. George Bagnall received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, Robert Wise received an Irving G. Thalberg award, and 2 honorary Oscars were given out. One to Yakima Canutt for his recognition as a stunt man as well as for his innovations to help other stunt men and women keep themselves safe, and one for Y. Frank Freeman for his first 30 years of service to the Academy.
