Billy Crystal hosts again, and this year is a milestone for the filmmakers responsible for bringing the world of Middle-Earth to the big screen. The 3rd Lord Of The Rings movie, The Return Of The King, became the first (and so far only) fantasy film to win the Best Picture prize. Blake Edwards was given an honorary Oscar for his extraordinary writing, producing and directing. Meanwhile, 2 Scientific Technical Awards were presented: one to Digidesign for the design, development, and implementation of the ProTools digital audio workstation and one to Bill Tondreau of Kuper Controls for his significant advancements in the field of motion picture control technology for motion picture visual effects.
