Billy Crystal hosted the show for the first time at Dorothy Chandler. Portions of the show were hosted from different parts of the world via satellite. Mel Gibson and Glenn Close participated from London, Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward participated from Sydney, Charlton Heston and Norma Aleandro rom Buenos Aires and Jack Lemmon hosted a segment from Moscow. Jessica Tandy became the oldest winner when she won for her performance in Driving Miss Daisy. Speaking of winners, all of the acting winners- Tandy, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, and Brenda Fricker- were all first timers. Howard Koch was given a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Akira Kurosawa was given an Honorary Oscar for accomplishments that inspired, selighted, enriched, and entertained audiences and influenced filmmakers around the world.
