Hosted by Jack Benny at the Shrine Auditorium, the ceremony continued the trend of honoring movies that tell stories aobut contemporary issues. Claude Jarman Jr. recieved a Juvenile Award, Samuel Goldwyn got an Irving G. Thalberg award, and 3 honorary oscars were given: one for Lawrence Olivier for his movie Henry V (which he produced, directed and acted in), one for Ernst Lubitsch for his contributions to motion pictures, and one for Harold Russell for his performance in The Best Years Of Our Lives. Russell became the only actor to earn 2 oscars for the same performance.
